Review of Bajaj Discover 135cc

Bajaj Discover 135cc has been Manufactured by Bajaj

Bajaj Discover 135cc is an upgradation over Bajaj Discover 110cc and Bajaj Discover 125cc.It has blown the market from the time of its launch with many buyers from India and outside India lining up to know more and more about the specifications of the bike. The digital Twin Spark ignition system and Nitro X shock absorber, integrated to the bike has much attraction among the bike buyers. It is available in three colors black, red and blue but the black one has got the maximum buyers due to the much sporty looks.

The bike is using the latest technology and is a competitor to the already launched Bajaj Pulsar twins and the 125cc Bajaj Discover. The bike has edge over other models not only in looks but the engine and cost of the bike is much appreciable. The cost of the bike is less than Bajaj Pulsar twins. The bike has intermittent stops .It can be said to be in-between Discover 125cc and Pulsar 150cc in performance and if checked cost wise, then it is better than both.

Sporty Look of the Bike

The look of the bike is powered with. Black finishing .The engine, silencer and shock absorber all have black color. Both the headlight and the sound of the horn are impressive and attractive. A new tachometer, fuel gauge and a trip meter are added to the looks. Bike has a red and blue strip that gives a great combination to the black color. The seat and handle are positioned well and makes it a complete sports bike.

Bajaj Discover 135cc

Engine, Power, Torque

The engine of Bajaj Discover 135cc is much efficient than the 125cc Bajaj Discover and it pumps out 13.1bhp @ 8500rpm and has a maximum torque 1.21 kgm @ 6500 rpm. If compared to the Bajaj Pulsar model the engine pumps out 13.5 bhp @ 8500 rpm and has a maximum torque of 1.25 kgm @ 6500 rpm. The displacements of the two models are also comparable as Bajaj Pulsar displacement is 142.9 cc DTSi and Bajaj Discover 135cc is 134.2 cc, DTSi. The difference in power and engine is equated by the difference in weight. The weight of Bajaj Pulsar is more than Bajaj Discover 135cc . The tank of the bike can contain 17 L of fuel for Bajaj Pulsar 150cc and 10 L for Discover 135cc

Comfort and Ride

The seat and handle are positioned well to make a comfortable ride though the knee won’t fit onto the tank for those having above six feet heights but for average heights it is the best bike. The fatter rear tyre is 100/90 instead of 100/90X17 rear tyre of Bajaj Discover 125 cc. A swing ram pivot section and rubber tray guard at the centre base of the bike makes it much stylish. There is flat chrome filler cap and is an odd one out in the bike .The tachometer is rounded by a supple grip and dogleg levers.

Engineering and Styling

Bajaj’s dual-plug DTS-I is used to make the four stroke engine much efficient. The engine has a single cylinder and is air cooled to facilitate a smooth ride to the biker. The combustion is effective and has Keihin CV carburetor. Armed with friction busting technology like frictions on contact surface and arms mounts are present on the Bike .Clutch is comfortable to use and the four gears can be changed from one to another with much ease. The bike has an O-ring and a well placed drive chain.

Bajaj Discover 135cc

The black color is seen all over the coil springs, exhaust finisher, mirrors, handle and chamber .The complete black makes it much attractive with a few strips of submerged different colors. Compared to Discover 125cc the weight of Discover 135cc is more by 4 kgs that can be results from the new suspension added to the new bike. The suspension helps the bike to have a smooth ride. The front suspension is telescopic that checks a travel of 130mm and is one of the best of its type. The rear suspension is the Nitro X kind that is similar to the costlier bike the Bajaj Pulsar. Seat and Handle bar are placed to be much benefiting to the biker giving much stability and superior looks to the bike. The chassis is a double cradle type and is similar to 125 cc model.

Special features

The bike has many features similar to the Bajaj Pulsar 150cc model and also a few characteristics and parts are borrowed from the Discover 125cc .The speed of the bike can go up to 105 kph on a good road .The corners and brakes are much effective in any kind of traffic. The fuel efficiency for a crowded city can be 52.1kpl and for a open road it can go up to 55kpl..It is a much effective bike with no comparison to other models available as its cost. If is a complete package taking care of the needs of average riders with an trifling cost attached to it.

Some positive and negative specifications of the bike.

The bike when compared to other models like Discover 125cc and Bajaj Pulsar 150cc, can be said to be having these extra specifications-

* The engine can deliver 57 kpl
* It has got 10L of tank
* The high class efficiency of the bike is fitted with a Keihin CV carburetor.
* The weight of the bike is 132kg that is 4 kg more than 125cc bike.

* The brakes of the bike are 240mm .Disc brake in the front.
* The chassis of the bike is same as that of 125cc.
* NitroX shock absorbers are same as of Bajaj Pulsar 150cc.
* Maintenance free 12V battery
* Black color all over the bike with red and blue strips to enhance the look of the bike

Bajaj Discover 135cc

Some of the issues related to the bike

* The bike has been complained by a few bikers about a firing problem at the start of the bike but this problem has not been found among the maximum users, only a few bikers have faced such problem.
* The second problem is the slim chain cover almost open type that makes the bike not fit for the professional bikers .This factor is also a much biased one and can vary for the choice of the biker.
* For those having heights above six feet the knee won’t fit onto the tank that can be a problem up to certain extends but again it very from biker to biker.

Cost

The price of the bike Bajaj Discover 135cc is between Rs 56000 – Rs 58,000 depending upon the city type. For Mumbai city the bike costs approximately close to Rs 57000.The pulsar model cost is more than 62000 in the major cities.

Review of Maruti - Grand Vitara

Maruti - Grand Vitara has been Manufactured by Maruti

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara

Maruti Udyog Ltd has launched its sports utility vehicle Grand Vitara. The vehicle is a completely built unit (CBU) import. Grand Vitara is built in Hamamatsu in Japan, small car capital of Japan. In my limited knowledge, I cannot figure out any other vehicle in this price segment that has a V6.

Maruti Grand Vitara

Style

The appeal of the Grand Vitara is enhanced by the more contemporary front it just has. The most notable changes is the headlamps which are in unison with the wider body coloured front grille which gives it the slick looks. The fog lamps are bigger and changes have been brought into the bumper and the air dam. Another feature added is the split 5-spoke alloy wheels.

These new features have given the Grand Vitara the aggressive power-look. Vitara is a sharp little truck. Positives include the honeycomb grille, clear lens headlights, wheel flares that impart a sense of power, and simple yet attractive bodylines. An aerodynamic roofline leads to a discreet tailgate spoiler and the spare wheel is retained on the rear door. New Vitara features larger rear combination lamps that integrate into the thicker “C” pillar design. Access to the cabin is easy; the boot has a side-hinged door (similar to the Ford Endeavour).

A clever piece of Suzuki’ engineering can be felt in the tailgate. Opening to a full 90 degrees, the gas strut for the side-hinged tailgate has a two-position stop. The first stop at about 65 degrees ensures that the tailgate – with its protruding spare wheel – does not accidentally swing into the path of passing traffic. At the same time, when the tailgate is in the intermediate position, the right hand taillight is un-obscured while illuminated at night – a useful safety feature.

Engine

The powerful Suzuki engine unleashes an additional 12PS of power output in the 2736cc engine of the Grand Vitara. A variable in take system has been introduced that increases the overall efficiency of the engine. The maximum power output of the Grand Vitara now rises to 168PS at 6000rpm and a maximum torque rises to 236Nm at 4000rpm.

Maruti Grand Vitara

Fuel and Economy

The Vitara, with its large, aggressively tuned V6 is like a great white shark, with big teeth. The 166bhp V6 delivers grunt by the bucketful, and is incredibly responsive. Tap the throttle to make up that gap in traffic or to slingshot past a truck, and the Grand Vitara will lunge forward, even from as low as 1500rpm. The rev-band is meaty throughout, so this portly 1.7-tonne SUV blitzes the ton as quickly as a Honda City VTEC! The Grand Vitara’s cruising ability is excellent, and the effortless manner in which you can overtake makes it a great highway car.

However, even more impressive than flat-out acceleration is the torque. Uphill sections were a revelation, the Grand Vitara merrily chugging up in third gear where other SUVs would struggle in second. On our off-road course, the transfer box never really needed to be shifted into low. However, the big, heavy Vitara, with its aggressively tuned 2.7-litre engine glugs heavily, barely making the 6.5kpl figure in the city and only managing 8.7kpl on the highway.

The Vitara’s ride and handling are what really peg it back. The body-on-frame construction and non-independent rear suspension make for unimpressive dynamics. The Grand Vitara thumps over poor surfaces, and feels unsettled on anything that is less than perfectly smooth. Floor the throttle on a bumpy or loose surface, and it’s easy to break traction. Potholes, ruts and speed-breakers are easily felt, and on an undulating surface, the Grand Vitara tends to pitch around, and feels nervous. The redeeming feature is the steering, which is fairly accurate and direct. Off-road however, it’s a different story: all that torque is put to good use. Short overhangs, good wheel articulation and the low range option will get the Vitara through most stuff. The long wheelbase may be a pain during ramp-over, especially when fully loaded.

Maruti Grand Vitara

Looks and build - the xl-7 is a face lifted version of the old Grand Vitara. The changes are less, but are good. The front used to look like the one in the photo shown above. On the xl-7, it looks much more elegant and macho looking. Headlamps are multi reflector. The grille is especially good with its chrome strip. The bumper has huge fog lamps. The side looks muscular and strong. The wheel arches and alloys look good. The tires are 16’’ inch. I feel that the side looks like that of a land cruiser. The rear is bland. The tail lamps are not even multi reflector. The spare wheel is placed at the back and it does not get a full cover either. The build quality is good enough for an SUV. The looks are okay and are good in the side. But the Pajero definitely gets the advantage here.

Interior

The interior has a lot of leather and wood. The seats are comfortable. The instrument panel is well laid out. The dash looks very attractive with wood and its LCD readout. Ergonomics are very good. There is plenty of space too. The second row has legroom, but not as much as expected. There is a third row though. Materials used in the interior are of good quality. For a car of its price, people will expect a luxurious interior (like in the Vector, Accord, Mondeo and Camry). The Vitara definitely has it. The Terracan is way behind. The Vitara is as good as, or better than the Pajero in some aspects.

Ride and Handling

Ride and Handling characteristics are according to the test drive on new Grand Vitara by the Whatcar magazine.
The Grand Vitara’s four-wheel-drive system carries four modes (all in a dial under the temperature control) for nearly all types of situations. The 4H mode is for navigating the highways and byways of everyday driving. The 4H locking mode locks the center differential when conditions get slippery. The 4L Lock mode is for tackling seriously muddy, rocky hills. In this mode the differential is always locked and will help to descent the muddy hills. The fourth mode is Neutral, which allows you to tow the vehicle on all four wheels without racking up mileage.

Maruti Grand Vitara

New Grand Vitara’s ‘built-in ladder frame’ construction when compared with the body on frame design of the predecessor permits lower floor heights, in turn lowering the centre of gravity despite the high ground clearance of 200mm. New Grand Vitara’s handling characters are good with Mcpherson strut suspension at the front and Multi link type at the rear. The brakes are ventilated disc at the front, leading, and trailing drum type at the rear. If offered in India this must be the only D segment SUV with drum brake at the rear which will easily make the buyers to keep distance from the new Grand Vitara. New Grand Vitara also falls in its Ride characteristic - the ride does not give any confidence to the new Grand vitara’s rider.

Review of Bajaj Pulsar 220cc

Bajaj Pulsar 220cc has been Manufactured by Bajaj

After launching the Pulsar 200cc now Bajaj manufactures have launched Pulsar 220cc, the definitely male among the Indian bikes. The new Pulsar DTS-Fi (Digital Twin Spark-Fuel injected) is the first bike from Bajaj Auto with the powerful combination of twin spark plugs and fuel-injection technology and is an ultimate machine for the performance motorcycle enthusiast. The latest offering has set new benchmarks in technology, performance, and styling to address the needs of a growing segment of pro-bikers. The 200cc Pulsar is said to be the best looking and handling of the Pulsar Family. However, people have yet to see whether they will age as easily as its predecessors will. Bajaj’s Pulsar DTS-Fi 220cc motorcycle priced at around Rs 85,000.

The Design

On the flip side, the attractive fairing-mounted mirrors reflect little other than the rider’s elbows. The backlit switchgear feels perfect to the touch and is totally contact-free, also featuring self-cancelling turn indicators. Grips and brake and clutch levers are adequate. Look ma, no bulbs! Only amber-coloured LEDs are used for the instruments, dominated by a large analogue rev counter.

A contact-free digital speedometer drive displays precise speeds in a digital read-out. An engine-redline flasher strobes out its communication when the bike is over-revved; the same light doubles up as a low-fuel warning icon. Bajaj has persevered with the same tank on the 220, adding embossed decals and a tank pad. The stepped seats are adequately padded for both rider and pillion and ends in a smart two-piece grab bar. Angular side panels and a smooth tail fairing add panache, as do strips of nifty LED brake warning lights.

Bajaj Pulsar 220cc

Engine and power train

The 220cc oil cooled, Digital Twin Spark Fuel Injection (DTS FI) engine produces an awesome power of 20PS at 8500rpm (though not comparable, pulsar 220cc is more powerful than thunderbird) and an incredible torque of 19.12Nm at 6500rpm. Bajaj’s well-proven exhaust TEC (to beef up low-down power) features in pulsar 220cc too. Pulsar 220cc features the standard five-speed gearbox with one down and four up pattern. Oil cooler placed just below the fuel tank helps in further cooling of engine lubricant and keep this high performance engine cool.

A six-speed gearbox like other international bikes could have been better. Thanks to the fuel injection for the gentle release of power, this enables smoother acceleration, also minimal power loss while shifting gears. Pulsar DTS-Fi can reach 60kph in 4.4 seconds and can past 110kph in 18.8sec. Pulsar 220cc can reach a top speed of 131kph. Not alone this top speed is impressive; you can easily maintain the pulsar 220cc in 100 -115kph. Though the fuel efficiency/mileage depends on riding behaviour you can expect anything more than 35kpl from pulsar 220cc DTS FI. Bajaj is offering impeccable warranty for its pulsar 220cc - the DTS FI engine has been given 5yrs warranty in addition to the 2yrs or 30000km vehicle warranty.

Ride and handling

The wheelbase has been lengthened to 1,350 mm from 1,330 of the older Pulsar, along with a new swing arm. Pulsar 220cc DTS-Fi uses telescopic forks at the front and Gas-charged twin shocks are used at the rear. A twin-member tubular frame and an elliptical swing arm mounted on needle roller bearings. This combination gives a good blend of stiffness and flick ability for the bike though pulsar 220 weighs 150kg. MRF tubeless tyres —90/90 x 17 inches at the front and 120/80 x 17 inches at the rear provide good support and traction control for pulsar 220cc DTS Fi. This high performance bike is the India’s first bike to have a rear disc brake although this will help for the effective control; safety in Indian conditions is yet to be seemed.

Bajaj Pulsar 220cc

The tyres of the new DTS-Fi are tubeless and hence offer an exciting riding experience. The 55-watt projector low-beam headlamp offers a decent view of the road ahead. The fully digital dash is easy to read and difficult to mistake. The distinctive tail lamps of the Pulsar DTS-Fi add a bit of dash. Overall, the body of the motorcycle still looks like the Pulsar family, but with sharper edges. The front faring is the difference - It is well integrated into the rest of the bodywork, and the sidelights and indicators look excellent. With a performance motorcycle, one should really not expect a high fuel efficiency/ mileage figures - still we expect the Pulsar DTS-Fi to get around 45 kilometres to a litre.

Comfort

It is comfortable all right, but there is a hitch. The fixed fairing comes back a bit too much and unless you are sitting so that the tailbone is touching the seat step, your knees will be rubbing on the fairing. That is a bit uncomfortable. I guess when you are riding it in jeans; it would grip the tank quite hard before hitting the brakes hard. In riding pants, the armour has that privilege of being very intimate with the fairing end. Shorties - I’m guessing 5′5″ and below will not notice this.

For the manufacturers, especially rivals, it would signal the opening of a new market at the very top of the pecking order. A market all of us enthusiasts are milling about in, but the shelves have been empty so far. The Pulsar 220 might actually cause competing products to fill the shops. We already know that TVS is working on an Apache 180. A successful P220 might even prod Hero Honda (or Honda, or both) to upgrade, re-arm or replace the Karizma with something more serious. It might actually engineer separate market spaces for enthusiast-centric product strategy, which so far, does not exist. For us, it would be the beginning of an era of machines and we have been forced to only dream about so far.

Bajaj Pulsar 220cc

Special features

In addition to the features mentioned in design section, both these bikes have special features, which increases their practicality. Pulsar 200cc also leaves its drive chain exposed with O’ ring sealed, which is pre-lubricated to help it stay reliable inspite of running open without protection is one such example. Similar to its sibling Pulsar 220cc-soon to be launched, the pulsar 200cc bike throws away the kick lever and makes you to crank the engine only with your thumb unlike the Karizma, which offers both self, and Kick mechanism for cranking. Both these bikes use best instruments and unheard features in any Indian bike. Both Pulsar 200cc and the new Karizma have Digital odo Meter, Digital Fuel Gauge and Digital Trip Meter. Pulsar 200cc features a digital console, which uses only LEDs and intelligently varies its amber backlight intensity for viewing in either day or night.

Road test

When we road tested the bike, we find that it is no less impressive in the flesh. We are not sure that making all Pulsars look so similar is such a great idea, but the 220 does have presence. The 220cc motor is good for 20.5 bhp – it destroys all previous 0-100 kph and top speed times for bikes. But making a bigger motor go faster is easy. What is great is the 220’s dynamic ability. Despite being a fair bit longer than the smaller Pulsars, the 220 is very quick and confident in corners, and most bikes in India would find it hard to keep up. That it rides very well over broken roads and brakes with great composure is a bonus. What we are saying is that overall – product, packaging and pricing – Bajaj have more or less hit the nail square on the head. I would not be surprised at all, if there are not enough 220s to go around. Rs 90,000 have a way of disappearing when broken up into EMIs.

Hot in 220cc pulsar

In 220cc Pulsar the most important feature of all is the fuel injection mechanism, which is responsible for the quick throttle and the linear power curve. The Bajaj Pulsar DTS-Fi is the first Indian motorcycle with an oil-cooled engine. Together, they make for a potent combination. The Hero Honda Karizma as well as the Pulsar DTS-Fi weigh 150 kgs, and the extra 3 bhp of the DTS-Fi as well as the power delivery characteristics make this an easy Karizma-beater.

Review of Maruti SX4

Maruti SX4 has been Manufactured by Maruti

Maruti’s second global offering after the very successful Swift is Maruti SX4 that has been launched in India, even before being launched in Japan or Europe. The first thing is the engine, which Maruti claims has the performance of an A4 segment car, is being launched globally with the SX4 in India first. Suzuki has unveiled the SX4, a mini SUV that is based on the Swift platform. SX4 that is created because of a joint development agreement between Suzuki and Fiat Auto SpA signed in April 2003 is an extended and raised Swift platform that comes with switchable three-mode 4×4 system for 2WD, 4WD Auto mode and 4WD Lock mode.

The SX4 comes with Maruti’s new M-16 engine. This one has twin overhead cams, it has a drive by-wire throttle and it produces a healthy 102 bhp in comparison with City’s 77 bhp. It also has an extra 2 kgm of torque. Therefore, obviously, it did come out ahead…but just by a little bit. The SX4 is undeniably chunky and funky and, lined up against the sea of ordinariness that is the C-segment, is refreshingly different. The aggressive grille swept back headlamps and steeply raked windscreen along with the chunky wing mirrors and kinked quarter glass make for a head- turner with imposing road presence. The only ordinary, or should I say conventional part of the design is the boot section but even that is well integrated into the overall design language, the prominent shoulder line merging into the tail lamp and the tail section being suitably pumped-up and muscular. In fact viewed from the rear three-quarters the SX4 looks huge. Boot space, at 505litres, is the best in class.

The driving position of the SX4 is excellent even though the steering is adjustable only for rake and is high-set in a mini-SUV sort of way. This results in excellent visibility and means the hip-point is rose, which sees you walk into the car, not crawl in traditional Suzuki fashion. Overall spaciousness is very good with the rear seat squab slightly raised over the fronts to improve visibility while also aiding ergonomics and comfort over long durations. Given the tall stance, it is surprising that the SX4 is a little tight on rear headroom though. The shoulder room is not as generous as say the Honda City and the version we tested, with leather seats, is a strict four-seater; forcing a third passenger to sit on the raised central hump of the back seat is a strict no-no. In addition, the middle passenger has to contend with a large transmission tunnel.

Maruti SX4

The large glass area gives the cabin a light and airy feel, complemented by a clean uncluttered dash that borrows a number of elements from the Swift, not the least of which is the three-dial Speedo binnacle (backlit in cool white). That is no bad thing though; quality of materials is definitely superior and the only let down are the plastics around the door trims and the power window switches that are hard to touch and a little low-rent. The dash is contemporary and attractive without resorting to excessive use of beige, the two slivers of polished plasto-steel flanking the central console being both tasteful and understated. I particularly liked the rotary climate control knobs that have a metallic finish and operate with a beautifully tactile feel.

When going from 0-100, the SX4 is a clear winner but in gear, it is a different story. This is because the SX4 seems to run out of steam at around 5,000rpm. The torque curve on the City is linear and crisper, which makes it very much drive-able in the city and is rapidly, the more refined engine. However, the SX4 engages the driver in the punchy, strong mid-range i.e. between 2,500 and 5,000 rpm. The gearboxes are. The SX4 steering leaves a lot to be desired. Over bumps and undulations, the steering gets skittish. In the city traffic, it feels just great to nip in and out of traffic and for parking, it is just wonderfully light. The SX4 leads on ground clearance.

The SX4, with its 16-inch rims and 205 tyres does offer better grip around tyres. The all-new SX4 sedan from Maruti is being launched in two variants sporting 1.6-litre engine. The lower version of SX4, LXi, is likely to be priced at Rs 5.5 lakh and the higher variant, ZXi, would be approximately priced at Rs 7 lakh. Maruti SX4 will belch out a total of 102-horse power with the help of Suzuki’s advanced, next generation M-series global engine. The car will sport a 16-valve, DOHC, 1.6-litre engine that will meet the stringent Bharat stage-IV emission norms. In addition, the car can be made compatible with the forthcoming Euro-V emissions norms too, if needed.

Maruti SX4

SX4 has been especially groomed with Swift-like modern looks to take on the current segment leader, Honda City. The extended version of the same platform is being used for the SX4 that will currently be sold in China and India. The company claims the new SX4 to be the tallest, longest and the widest car in the ‘C’ segment. With enough of legroom and headroom in the offering, it will be a complete driver’s car. Cherry on the cake is its high ground clearance of 190mm. The short overhangs and the large glass area adds to its beauty and makes it more featurish.’

Exterior

The exteriors of the SX4 had been crafted to make the interiors more spacious. Though this car is usually a hatch in other countries and is developed to a sedan, the SX4 is different, different from the competitors, it is like a crossover, and it has the presence of feel of a mini SUV type of look. This is reason why it stays away from the other saloon of this segment, its looks a bit of a class higher; it has the likes to take up with the Optra 1.6 and even the Toyota Corolla.

The muscular styling of this car reflects the power under this bad boy and the cockpit like interiors inside, this car is also the tallest, widest and the longest of the competition and makes it the complete young powerful man machine. This car is made from the influence of the so-called “Latest European design”. The SX4 is made to provide the best of luxury to their customers. The SX4 has an impressive ground clearance of 190mm, whereas the city has only 160mm. Tubeless tyres, alloy wheels, stop lamp, rear fog lamp, front fog lamps are the other exterior features.
Interior

The tail lamps dominate the stubby, nearly notchback style boot lid. Reflectors integrated into the rear bumper and a third stop lamp offer additional safety. Large, electrically adjustable outside rear-view mirrors offer the driver a good perspective, but may be prone to damage in the crowded roads of Indian cities. The SX4’s cabin has an airy, roomy feel despite the high shoulder line, thanks to the large glass area. The interior of the sedan has been a given dual-tone theme and though plastic panels abound, the quality of materials used and the finish is top-notch lending it a pleasing, user-friendly and premium feel.

Maruti SX4

Leather seats are optional in the top-end ZXi variant, but this trim level comes with a neatly integrated in-dash music system as part of the standard package. Automatic air-conditioning with attractive matt-silver dials and steering-wheel-mounted controls for the music system are also part of standard fitment in the ZXi variant. To arm itself better for the fight with the Honda City, Maruti has chosen a number of comfort and safety features that will not be available in sedans currently available in the Rs 6-7 lakh price range.

Maruti Suzuki SX4 is assorted with elegant features, which makes the model worth possessing. These are:

- ABS
- EBD
- Dual SRS airbags
- Front and rear side doors having impact beams
- Seat belt pre-tensionless
- Force limiters
- Car immobilizer

Review of Mahindra Scorpio

Mahindra Scorpio has been Manufactured by Mahindra

Mahindra Scorpio has redefined the expectations of the SUV (sports utility vehicles) buyer and has set a new benchmark for the industry to follow. Its strong engine complements its good looks and sophisticated interior design. The Scorpio’s chain-driven SZ 2600 Plus DI diesel engine pumps out an adequate 1i5bhp of power and a massive 26 kgm of torque.

The wraparound, multi-reflector, clear lens type headlamp, the aggressive grille, curvaceous, impact-absorbing side cladding, fire resistant interiors, the stepped roof design to allow more headroom for passengers in the rear and the minimalist, but user-friendly dashboard have set a benchmark for the others to follow. Scorpio is available in 4 variants - Turbo 2.6, Turbo 2.6 DX, Sportz, Turbo 2.6 SLX.

Style and Build

The looks of the Scorpio are burly and this is a bruising thing for the competition. Thanks to the sheer presence it has, especially when barrelling down the road and viewed in a front three-quarter shot, the Scorpio gives the impression that it can swat the competition. The high and finely muscled lines coupled to those beefy Bridgestones adorning pseudo-alloy look steel wheel rims is Bollywood at its most ingenious. But then the question to ask is, why not?

Scorpio

It is an ever evolving market place, where now more than at any other time previous in our nation’s automotive history, many C-segment car buyers are seeking an alternative. The wares available to these buyers have either been archaic (Bolero and Sumo), unstylish (Qualis) or pricey (Safari). It is Mahindra’s intention to compete with all of these models and come up with something that cannot be tagged with their deficiencies.

While waistline and the roof give it some sense of proportion, Mahindra weren’t bold enough to do some original thinking which was also contemporary. The front end is decidedly Korean and if any one has seen the Kia Retona Jeep they will know where the inspiration for the seven vertical slat grilles comes from. The head lights though impart a bit of character while the wraparound bumper with the recessed spots adds a dose of style.

I wish the sides were cleaner and the metal punched in the new body shop rather than claddings being employed to enhance the rugged appeal. Same goes for keeping to rain gutters. And while we are at it, can you fellas tell us who it was who forgot to engineer an inner hinge for the tailgate and left it out in the open for us to comment on? Then there is the abruptly lopped off rear end.

Scorpio

So much about the gripes but there are plus points as well, like the fine stance at standstill, the trendy ski racks which change the Scorpio’s profile to a sporty one, the alloy-look wheel caps on the steel wheels, the brilliant surface finish of all the metal body parts and great plastic stuff on the exterior. But the panel gaps, though reduced from the days of the Bolero are omnipresent and it is in this area that better thought in design and execution will have to be lavished by Goenka and his team because nothing else will do.

Engine and Transmission

Even though it comes from an agricultural background, the SZ 2600 DI engine is the strength of the Scorpio. Employing a KKK turbocharger, this turbodiesel was developed for Mahindra by famed Austrian engine consultancy AVL from a previous tractor engine it had done for the Mahindra Arjun. The large displacement plus the brilliantly matched turbo makes for torquey power delivery which is a delight and a boon for a vehicle of its girth and weight. On the flip side are noise and high fuel consumption.

Make no mistake about it, the greatest attribute about the new Scorpio is its powerplant which is the way forward for the rest of the industry. And this is not difficult to comprehend. The four-cylinder direct injection all-cast iron engine has cubic capacity on its side to begin with: 2609cc (sporting all-square cylinder dimensions of 94×94mm). This engine was earlier used in some of the Mahindra tractors and because the block could afford a large displacement this was chosen as the mill to be developed by AVL of Austria which designed the powerplant’s internals, gave it an 18.8:1 compression ratio, added a KKK K04 turbocharger (operating at 2.2 bar boost pressures) and gave it robustness to take on tough operating conditions.

Scorpio

This push-rod unit, no overhead camshaft here even though some others might have suggested so, activates overhead valves but as you will read further, this doesn’t impinge on the performance delivered. Mahindra states that the engine develops 109bhp (at 3800rpm), making it the first Indian-built UV to have power output in excess of the 100bhp mark. No less impressive is the 255.2Nm of torque (made at 1800rpm). The Scorpio needed this sort of engine performance given its bulk and weight (1895kg kerb weight) and while we would have liked a bit more, generally the power and torque on tap will be appreciated tremendously by all those who desire street cred from their SUV.

Mahindra has done a good job of packaging the ancillaries under the bonnet. Given the fact that air con and power steering were to be OE from day one, Mahindra thoughtfully adopted a very large radiator which is a step in the right direction. On the engine front there is much to applaud Mahindra for, especially on the thought process behind its concept and development, considering the fact that it can work itself better with turbocharging to meet future emission legislation.

A hydraulic clutch is employed to effect the transfer of power via the 5-speed manual gearbox which is essentially the Peugeot BA-10 unit standardised by Mahindra some years ago. Nothing wrong in the choice of ‘box but Mahindra could have looked at getting the shift actuation to be less clunky and smoother shifting than what we have at the moment. Mahindra has worked on the BA-10 transmission for the Scorpio application but it yet needs to go that extra mile to make it just right for those C-segment carwallahs it is trying to lure. I can’t resist adding that nothing else will do.

Performance, Handling, Fuel Economy

The Scorpio lives up to its macho image with the most powerful diesel engine in the MUV segment. The 2.6-litre direct-injection turbocharged engine has come in for its first major overhaul, gaining a common rail direct-injection system, replacing the old distributor-type fuel pump, along with a host of other changes. Power has risen by 6bhp to 115, and torque by 2.3kgm to 28.3. The aim was increased smoothness and refinement, better response, and of course, better emissions control. It is more perky and responsive as well, especially at the bottom end, the reactions both quicker and meatier.

Turbo lag has been appreciably reduced, and the power delivery is more linear now, the torque curve smoother, without the sudden burst of acceleration when the turbo kicked in on the old car. The Scorpio, always a good city car, is now even easier, more driveable through traffic, making up gaps in quick time, and getting more swiftly away from the lights. The figures speak for themselves: the CRDe is both faster in the 0-100kph sprint, taking 16.53sec to the old Turbo’s 19.63sec, and is better through the gears as well - 20-80kph in the third gear is completed in a quick 13.69 seconds while the older one finishes a 40-100kph dash in 17.8 seconds, in the same gear.

But what the figures don’t tell you is the impressive way the Scorpio delivers its performance. It never feels stressed and the engine is pretty quiet and smooth too, even more so than before. Noise levels are very acceptable for a diesel and all of this adds up to make the Scorpio a very relaxing car to drive both in town and on the highway. The gearbox hasn’t been changed much, except for a taller third gear, the ratio increased to 1.38:1 for better fuel consumption; however, the gearlever’s action has been improved, and though it’s still not very precise, the metallic clicking of the old box has gone, and the throw is slightly shorter as well. The taller third makes life easier on the highway, where it feels perfect for overtaking, but it’s perhaps a bit too tall for the city, making you drop down into second a bit too often, despite the higher torque.

Scorpio

Top-end performance is better as well, the Scorpio now going from 40kph to 100kph in 17.07sec when shifted into the fourth, as compared to the old car’s 23.7 sec. The CRDe consumes slightly less fuel (9.7kpl) than the older Scorpio (9.5kpl) in the city. It, however, returned 13.4kpl on the highway as compared to its older brother’s 13.8kpl. The Scorpio also has the option of four-wheel drive, and a 2.0-litre, 116bhp petrol engine sourced from Renault, which is extremely powerful and tractable, and fairly refined as well. The downside is awful fuel economy, at 6.7 and 7.8kpl in the city and highway.

The Scorpio’s chassis is extremely rigid and stiff and you don’t get an ounce of rattle or shake - remarkable for a Mahindra. The suspension is very supple and in city traffic or at low speeds, the Scorpio glides over the road, the soft suspension working noiselessly to filter out the bumps. Even on rough or bad road, at least when driven at low speeds, the suspension copes pretty well. The steering and other controls are pretty light, which makes the compact Scorpio easy to drive in town. However, pile on the speed and the Scorpio’s chassis exposes its flaws very quickly.

There are now larger 16-inch wheels, on slightly lower-profile tyres, which make for marginally sharper handling. Overall though, stability is still an issue, especially given the speeds the Scorpio is capable of. It still rolls excessively (and alarmingly at high speeds), pitches around at the rear, and wallows too much. The brakes have been improved with more bite and quicker response, but still lack a linear feel, tending to grab at the last moment. They feel over-servoed as well: stab the brakes and the rear wheels lock up immediately. This is quite a pain, and can get scary if you’re forced to brake mid-corner: over-compensate on the brakes and you’ll be punished with a scream from the rear, and an already jiggly rear end stepping happily out of line. The biggest thief of confidence, however, is the over-light steering, which lacks feel, and is telegraph-like in its response and accuracy.

Interiors and Comfort

The scorpio can seat 8-9 compartably depending on what type you choose, first the legroom at all the three rows is not that great but the fabulous interiors make up for it ,although not as polished as some phoren cars it still does a fab job. The a/c is one of the best in its class and the dashboard and the instrument panel at the front is absolutely best compare it to anything even qualis or tavera .the seats are comfortable and they are fire resistant too. only problem with the interiors is that if you want to add some extra speakers and woofers god bless you but there is very little space left for you to do it so.

Exteriors

Well as you might have seen for yourself the scorpio is also one of the best looking cars India has made (indigenously) (look at the competition ambassador, mar 800 hahaha),the scorpio looks best with the cladding on aither in a dual shade or in body colored but isn?t quiet pretty in the plastic ones .also the advantage it gives you while driving this cars is the it scares your fellow riders, rickshawallas, motorcyclist and even car owners. also the scorpio still can turn heads even after two years after launch only the right person has to sit at the driver seat .
